O'Grady was born to Jim O'Grady and Jan O'Grady. Jim O'Grady works as a financial advisor. The family was raised by her parents at home in Wheaton (Illinois) as well. She graduated in 1981 from the North High School in Wheaton. The model appeared in commercials for some time before moving out to Los Angeles. Her career started as model and actress for commercials with Montgomery Ward. She began her career on the screen with the romantic drama She's Having a Baby in 1988.
